Project 2: Digital Triptych

LECTURE: DIGITAL TRIPTYC - BRIEF

For the Huawei Honor Global Design Awards contest, our assignment was to create a triptych wallpaper using Adobe Illustrator, incorporating the concepts taught in the class. The initial step in the triptych project involved researching the theme we wanted to explore. Huawei provided three concepts for consideration:
  • Cultural Prosperity · Celebration: A Totem of Renewing Festive Culture. Create with important traditional cultural elements of various countries, such as Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Christmas, Mother's Day, Day of the Dead, Halloween, and Eid al-Fitr.
  • Renewal of Life · Return: Contemplate human beings' relationship with all things. With sustainable development as the starting point, creations must incorporate the concepts of environmental protection, biodiversity, energy conservation, and emissions reduction within the design details.
  • Genesis · The Future: Imagine the Innovative World of the Future. The world of the future will be constructed with the power of technology and art, using creativity and imagination.

TASK 2: DIGITAL TRIPTYCH

RATIONALE

I chose the second theme, "Renewal of Life · Return," as it seemed to convey a stronger message that could be effectively illustrated. This theme allows for exploration of the intricate relationship between humanity and the environment, emphasizing sustainable development, environmental protection, biodiversity, and the responsible use of resources. It provides a canvas to illustrate the significance of returning to a harmonious coexistence with nature, showcasing a powerful narrative that aligns with the ideals of renewal and ecological balance.

To commence the task, I began working on the concept board for the triptych. This involved articulating the rationale behind my chosen concept, outlining what each panel of the triptych would represent.

Concept: Renewal of life · Return: Contemplate human beings' relationship with all things

Panel 1: "Harmony Lost"
The first panel, "Harmony Lost," serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of deforestation, symbolizing the negative aspects of human beings' relationship with the environment. It portrays the devastating impact of uncontrolled resource extraction, drawing attention to the critical need for environmental protection and sustainability.

Panel 2: "Renewal Begins"
The second panel, "Renewal Begins," represents a turning point in the narrative. It emphasizes the potential for positive change as humans recognize the consequences of their actions and actively engage in reforestation efforts. This panel signifies hope and the beginning of a renewal process.

Panel 3: "Harmony Restored"
The third panel, "Harmony Restored," represents the ultimate vision of a renewed relationship between human beings and the environment. It illustrates the successful integration of sustainable practices and responsible stewardship, leading to a harmonious coexistence with nature.

Narrative Continuity:
Throughout the triptych, the narrative progresses from destruction and despair to hope, renewal, and ultimately, the restoration of harmony. It tells the story of human beings recognizing their responsibility to protect and restore the environment, highlighting the potential for positive change when sustainable practices are embraced.

The triptych invites viewers to contemplate the intricate relationship between human beings and all living things, emphasizing the power of collective action and the vital role of environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, energy conservation, and emissions reduction in creating a sustainable and harmonious future.

VISUAL RESEARCH

Subsequently, I conducted research on the web to gather inspiration and ideas related to the chosen concept. The visuals I discovered during this exploration became the foundational elements upon which I built the structure of my triptych.

SKETCH

In the final stages, I translated my ideas into sketches for the three distinct panels and submitted them to Mr. Zamri for feedback. Upon receiving positive comments, indicating that my sketches were well-executed, I proceeded to create the digital illustration for my triptych.

DIGITISATION

I initiated the digital creation of my triptych using Adobe Illustrator. The process began by placing my initial sketches onto individual artboards. Employing tools such as the pen tool and curvature tool, I meticulously traced the sketches, adding colors, shadows, and intricate details to each panel. The creation unfolded systematically, with a total of four artboards dedicated to Panel 1, Panel 2, Panel 3, and the complete triptych.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
- The sketches look really good, proceed with the digitisation.

Week 7
- Try adhering to a colour scheme for each frame.

REFLECTION

The Digital Triptych project for the Huawei Honor Global Design Awards presented a compelling exploration of the theme "Renewal of Life · Return." This choice allowed for a meaningful examination of the intricate relationship between humanity and the environment, emphasizing sustainability, environmental protection, biodiversity, and responsible resource use. The concept board served as the foundational roadmap, guiding the development of each panel to convey a coherent and impactful narrative throughout the triptych.

Extensive research played a pivotal role in shaping the visual elements of the project. Exploration on the web for inspiration and ideas provided a solid reference point, sparking creativity and informing the foundational elements of the triptych. These research pictures served as crucial building blocks, influencing the subsequent stages of the project and contributing to the overall depth and richness of the final illustration.

The transition from conceptualization to execution was marked by meticulous sketching and subsequent feedback from Mr. Zamri, validating the well-executed sketches and providing encouragement for the digital illustration phase. Utilizing Adobe Illustrator, the project unfolded systematically across four artboards, allowing for focused attention on each panel's details while maintaining a holistic view of the overall composition. The Digital Triptych project not only enhanced technical skills but also underscored the power of design as a compelling medium for advocating positive change, marking a significant milestone in the creative journey.
