Topic 6
In the lecture, Dr. Yip elaborated on visual analysis, which involves three key stages: Observation, Analysis, and Interpretation. This method focuses on understanding design by examining its visual elements and principles, aiming to discern the decisions made by designers in the creation process. Dr. Yip also suggested reading articles in MyTimes such as "Why Writing Is a Valuable Design Skill" and "4 Reasons Designers Should Write" to aid in our task.

RECAP OF TASK 2 BRIEF
In Task 2, we were entrusted to assess, investigate, document, and analyze the existing art/design work selected in Task 1. Our objective was to study the design principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, and effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that we had chosen.

Phase 1: Observation
The Rusty Anchor:
- The central focus of this composition is an ancient, weathered anchor. Its rusted surface reveals years of exposure to saltwater, wind, and time. The intricate patterns etched onto the metal create a tactile quality. The anchor stands tall, partially submerged in the water, suggesting both permanence and vulnerability.

The Ocean and Sky:
- The serene blue hues dominate the background. The ocean stretches infinitely, merging seamlessly with the sky. The calm water reflects the sky’s clarity, evoking tranquility.
- The horizon line divides the image into two halves, emphasizing the anchor’s position at the meeting point of earth and sky.
- The serene blue hues belie the hidden threats. Beneath the calm surface, toxins from pollutants—such as heavy metals, plastics, and chemicals—may accumulate.
- Birds flying above suggest that life continues at the surface, possibly oblivious to the pollution below.

Phase 2: Analysis
Visual Harmony and Dynamic Engagement:
- The artwork's composition is balanced, with visual weight evenly distributed along the central axis, creating harmony and order.
- The waves' movement around the anchor adds dynamism, guiding the viewer's eye and engaging them in exploring the scene's depth.

Texture and Patina:
- The artist skillfully renders the anchor’s texture. The rough, corroded surface invites touch and contemplation. Its rusted state reflects the passage of time, but it also serves as a metaphor for human impact on oceans.
- The patina—the result of oxidation—adds character. It narrates the anchor’s history, hinting at storms weathered and secrets submerged.

Color Harmony:
- The harmonious blues—sky and sea—create a soothing palette. They evoke openness, infinity, and the eternal cycle of tides.
- The rusty brown introduces warmth, grounding the cool tones, bringing contrast to the artwork. It’s a bridge between the earthly and aquatic realms.

Phase 3: Interpretation
This image shows an underwater scene of an old anchor amidst oceanic pollution; it’s interesting because it juxtaposes natural beauty with human-induced environmental degradation. This artwork serves as a powerful commentary on environmental pollution. The juxtaposition of natural elements (water, sky) and human-made waste creates a stark contrast that underscores humanity’s impact on marine ecosystems. The corroded anchor symbolizes abandonment or neglect – perhaps indicative of society’s approach to ocean conservation. Meanwhile, life at the surface continues unaffected – for now – illustrating disconnection between actions (pollution) and their consequences.
My Further Thoughts
Upon observing the artwork, I am immediately struck by the artist’s use of color and light to create a clear distinction between the underwater world and the sky. The meticulous rendering of the anchor and the waste on the seabed makes the scene feel realistic and immersive. The artwork serves as a stark reminder of the environmental issues we face today. The sight of the polluted seabed is disturbing and prompts me to think about the impact of human activities on marine life. The toxic barrel is particularly alarming, symbolizing the dangerous substances we dump into the oceans. The anchor could symbolize humanity’s role in environmental degradation. Just as the anchor is heavy and pulls things down, human actions are dragging down the health of our planet. The rust on the anchor could represent the decay of our environment over time. The contrast between the polluted underwater world and the seemingly peaceful surface world is thought-provoking. It makes me ponder on the unseen damage we’re causing to the environment and the potential consequences if we continue on this path. Overall, this artwork makes me feel a sense of urgency to take action. It’s a powerful visual message about the state of our oceans and the need for immediate change in our behavior towards waste disposal and environmental conservation. Reflecting on this artwork, I am reminded of the fragile beauty of our oceans and the urgent need to protect them. The artwork's message of resilience and hope amidst the challenges faced by marine life is poignant. It serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to act as stewards of the environment, ensuring the health and well-being of our planet and future generations.

REFLECTIONS
Task 2 has deepened my understanding of visual analysis and its relevance to sustainable development goals. It has highlighted the power of art in conveying complex messages and inspiring action. Through this process, I have gained a greater appreciation for the intricate relationship between design principles and the intended message of an artwork. I have also developed a deeper understanding of the role of art in raising awareness about environmental issues and promoting positive change. One aspect that stood out to me during the analysis was the artist's skillful use of symbolism and imagery to convey the urgency of environmental conservation. The surreal composition, with its exaggerated proportions and haunting atmosphere, effectively captured the viewer's attention and provoked contemplation about the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems.
Overall, this task has been incredibly enlightening and has reinforced my commitment to advocating for the conservation of marine ecosystems. This task provided a valuable opportunity to deepen my understanding of visual analysis and its application in assessing and interpreting artworks. It highlighted the power of art and design as a means of communication and advocacy, reaffirming my commitment to using my skills and knowledge to contribute positively to addressing pressing global issues.
